Jack is the third generation on Holden Herefords. He took over management from his grandparents in 1987 and assumed ownership in 1999. They are a registered Hereford seedstock operation and currently calve about 350 cows and hold an annual production sale in March. Their sale in March 2017 will be the 51st annual sale and they will market 130 bulls and 20 females. The Holden genetics are in use all across the U.S. and have exported live cattle, semen, and embryos to many different countries. They are a family run operation and both children are involved.
When asked what are the major challenges the beef industry will face in the next 10 years, Jack responded, “Increasing government regulations and oversight in the beef industry, dealing with endangered species rules and lawsuits from environmental extremists and activists, health issues related to free-ranging bison and wildlife, COOL, animal ID, food chain traceability, and increasing beef production amid population increases and a shrinking land base.”
