HELENA, Mont. (January 31, 2024) – The Montana Stockgrowers Association’s (MSGA) producer profitability task force is excited to release its Producer Profitability Initiative brief. The Producer Profitability Initiative is a grassroots movement started by cattle ranchers and led by cattle ranchers who have a vision to create a sustainable future for the American livestock industry. This initiative is intended to encompass ranchers of all ages, management styles, operations large and small, feedlot operators, affiliate businesses, private property owners, and supporters of the livestock industry whose livelihood and identity are tied to ranching and whose focus is to ensure the sustainability of the American livestock industry while providing security for the domestic food supply.
“In December, MSGA’s membership passed member-led policy supporting organizational work on producer profitability. Since then, the task force has worked to build a framework for this initiative,” shared Lesley Robinson, MSGA First Vice President and producer profitability task force chair. “We are hearing confirmation from cattle producers that there is a need for an initiative like this. Momentum is building. Our hope is this initiative will provide an avenue for the livestock industry to join together and advance policies and programs that will make a significant and long-lasting impact for the livestock industry.”
The brief highlights five initial focus areas:
- Creating a favorable tax climate
- Improving government programs
- Minimizing barriers to entry for young or beginning livestock producers
- Finding solutions for labor challenges
- Developing industry mentorship opportunities
The next phase of the initiative will be producer profitability listening sessions held around Montana for producers to attend and share their thoughts, needs or ideas for creating a sustainable future for the American livestock industry. Dates and location will be announced in the coming weeks.
