Montana Stockgrowers Association Responds to President Trump’s Comments on Beef Prices

The Montana Stockgrowers Association (MSGA) is deeply concerned by recent comments from the Trump Administration to intervene in domestic beef prices and to expand beef imports from Argentina. MSGA strongly encourages the administration to not intervene in the domestic beef market, as that will have a potentially devastating effect on Montana cattle ranchers. These actions risk destabilizing an already volatile market and will have significant negative impacts on America’s cattle producers.

As cattle producers, we not only know how to raise the most nutritious, high-quality meat in the world, we also know what it’s like to feed our families and make our dollars stretch at the store. Beef remains a great value for American families.

U.S. cattle ranchers operate in one of the most transparent and competitive markets in the world, and any artificial manipulation of beef prices undermines the principles of fair trade and free enterprise that have long sustained rural economies. Interference in pricing not only threatens producers’ livelihoods but also jeopardizes the long-term health of the U.S. beef supply chain.

Equally troubling is the recent agreement with Argentina, which will increase beef imports, a country with a history of animal health and traceability challenges.

We urge the Administration to prioritize American ranching families, uphold science-based trade policies, and allow market forces to determine the value of beef. The strength of our industry depends on fair competition, transparency, and a level playing field for U.S. producers.

MSGA remains committed to working with policymakers to support rural economies, preserve consumer confidence in U.S. beef, and maintain America’s position as the global leader in beef production.

The Montana Stockgrowers Association is a grassroots membership organization and is the trusted voice of cattle ranchers. With over 140 years of history, MSGA advocates and ensures cattle ranching remains relevant, safe and a sustainable way of life for generations to come.
