HELENA, Mont. (March 21, 2022) – Today, Montana Stockgrowers Association (MSGA) joined Governor Greg Gianforte on the multi-generational Sieben Ranch, owned and operated by MSGA members, John and Nina Baucus and their family, to kick-off National Ag Week and discuss the importance of cattle ranching in Montana.
The tour, hosted by MSGA member and Montana Board of Livestock member, Nina Bacus, focused on the benefits of Montana production agriculture and the importance of keeping Montana ranching families on the land. Bacus shared a brief history of the ranch, which started in 1898 and is now raising its sixth generation.
Governor Gianforte commented on the importance of production agriculture to Montana’s economy and the many ways in which ranching operations preserve open landscapes and protect habitat conservation. Of Montana’s 93,149,312 acres in total land area, 62.4 percent of land is considered farm and ranch operations.
“Protecting landscapes is in the forefront of all Montana rancher’s minds and they take pride in doing that job. By keeping vast-unbroken landscapes intact with ranching, we can produce an income off the land, provide great wildlife habitat and grow the best beef in the world.”
Stated Jay Bodner, MSGA Executive Vice President
Governor Gianforte also announced the Montana Department of Livestock’s recently-secured cooperative interstate shipment (CIS) agreement with USDA Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS), which promotes the expansion of business opportunities for state-inspected meat and poultry establishments.
“It was an honor to join Governor Gianforte on a multi-generational Montana ranch operation in the Helena valley. We not only got to discuss the importance of cattle production on Montana’s economy, but the role ranching plays in land stewardship as well.”
Stated Jay Bodner, MSGA Executive Vice President
MSGA would like to thank Governor Greg Gianforte for his continued support of Montana agriculture and Sieben Ranch for hosting today’s tour.
